Different ways to own a complete result.

These illustrations show arrangements a company could examine. They are not client cases or claims about staffing, delivery time or savings. The right arrangement depends on the work, its consequences and the people involved.

Broader responsibility for one person.

Today, several roles may each hold one part of a deliverable. Information is translated at each handoff, and nobody can resolve a change without returning through the chain.

An alternative could give a suitably prepared person responsibility for more of the result, with company knowledge, connected tools and specialist support available where needed.

What to examine: Which decisions can that person make? What expertise and independent review remain necessary? What education, supervised practice and manageable workload would make the responsibility credible?

A team that owns the outcome.

Some work needs several disciplines. A team could share responsibility for the complete result instead of each function handing over only its own output.

Shared context and assistance can help the team inspect the same sources, see accepted decisions and coordinate the next action. Specialist contributions remain identifiable.

What to examine: Who owns acceptance and unresolved decisions? Does the arrangement reduce repeated briefing without hiding mistakes? Can people challenge the result and recover failed work?

Connected teams ready for the change.

One team's increased capacity can change what another team receives. The next step may need different information, a new decision or more review capacity.

The redesign could change the responsibilities, handoff or sequence between those teams, alongside the systems supporting them.

What to examine: Where does demand move? Can the receiving team handle it? What work is added or removed, and what development and support do people need?

Test an arrangement before expanding it.

Compare the proposed design with the existing one. Include accepted quality, total human effort, upkeep, effects on employees and the result for the customer. Use what happens to choose the next change.

One workflow may be the first implementation. Its purpose is to establish part of the capability your company wants to develop.
